Google AI reduces breast cancer detection misses by half: Millions die to breast cancer every year. Google AI is now better than radiologists to detect breast cancers. As per the research paper published on January 1 in Nature journal, it reduces the false negatives to 9.4 % from 20 % by that of the manual tests of the mammograms by doctors as per the report in The New York Times.
Dominic King, the head of UK Google Health, told AFP that the Google team is proud of the published findings. It suggests that Google is on the way to develop a tool to help clinicians to stop breast cancer with more accuracy. Earlier identifying of breast cancer is better for the patient. Our experts in Google think that this technology enables a doctor or a patient to get the best outcomes for their diagnosis. It also reduces the workload of doctors and nurses who are busy throughout the world.
An international team of researchers from Imperial College, London, and Google Health designed a computer model to diagnose x-ray images from approximately 29,000 women. Most of these mammograms were from the Cancer Research UK's OPTIMUM dataset collected from St.George's Hospital London along with Addenbrooke's Hospital and Jarvis Breast Centre in Guildford, Cambridge. Google AI algorithms outperformed six radiologists in reading these mammograms.
Professor Ara Darzi is the co-author of the research and director of CRUK or Cancer Research UK Imperial Center. He says that the findings of the study were far beyond his expectations. And it will have a significant impact on improving the quality of reporting and enable the radiologists to do more important things.
With two million women every year affected with breast cancer, Google AI detecting breast cancer better is a boon to them.
